Welcome Home - A Guide for New Shelter Dog Adopters

Bringing a dog home from the shelter is a hopeful moment, but it can also feel overwhelming, emotional, and unfamiliar. This introductory module sets the foundation for the Welcome Home Program by exploring what dogs experience during the transition from shelter to home and why safety is the cornerstone of everything that follows. In this module, we talk about the idea that for dogs, love and safety are inseparable. Before trust, before learning, and before behavior can stabilize, a dog needs to feel safe — both physically and emotionally. This module helps reframe early challenges, set realistic expectations, and ground you in compassion for both yourself and your dog.
